I have an exciting new theory about Lorde. She is not 17, she simply cannot be 17, she is actually 27 or older and has been living in a cave in New Zealand for the past 10 years, being groomed to emerge as a pop diva. This is the only possible explanation for her terrifying poise, maturity and confi dence. She politely tried to put me at my ease – she is very polite – but I felt like a stammering beginner. The only evidence that she is really 17 is a speckle of acne on her cheeks. But in all other respects, she seems like an exceptionally selfpossessed grown-up. We met at Wilton’s Music Hall, where she was having her photo taken. After the photos, she changed into her own clothes – black trousers, black top – offsetting her dark-purple lipstick and wonderful chestnut hair.
